Since 1979 Gregory Felando and John Greiser have produced an extensive variety of fine porcelain and stoneware pottery. Beginning with a wood fired kiln of their own design they created many beautiful works that carried the flashing of flame and ash. In 1986 with scrap redwood in short supply they switched to a smaller propane fired kiln maintaining the reduction firing schedule that produced the rich reds, greens, yellows, blues and many other colors. In 1997 a second, professionally built propane kiln was purchased for primarily reduction firings. The two partners use only glazes that they themselves mix and grind in the studio. In this way they can control what ingredients are used (no lead or cadmium is ever used), and achieve colors and glaze effects that commercial porducts cannot match. They have been able to reproduce many of the exquisite glaze colors of the classic Chinese tradition such as mirror black (see bowl above), ox blood or sang de boeuf, crackle glaze, emerald green, cobalt blue, and others. They also have developed a rich high-fire yellow and many unique glaze combinations. All of the ware is fired to cone 10 or 2300 deg. F so that it is fully vitrified and strong.

The studio is located in the redwood country of northern Mendocino county (map) in a scenic area called the Lost Coast. Only three miles from the Pacific Ocean, the studio is close to three campgrounds including the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, as well as the King Range National Recreational Area and the charming coastal community of Shelter Cove. Ocean fishing and hiking opportunities are superb. The studio is open every weekend for tours and sales. Week days it is best to call ahead to make sure the potters are there. Next time you are in Northern California why not give Greg and John a visit and enjoy the natural wonders of California's Lost Coast? Perhaps you will learn the mystery of Arcanum Ranch Pottery.
