Fungi and Lichens
If you missed her classroom instruction during the Redwood Ecology workshop you will
definitely want to take advantage of Virginia Waters revisiting Humboldt Redwoods
State Park for a wonderful field instruction on fungi and lichens of the Coast
Redwood region.
Investigate this branch of biology that is neither plants nor animals that reign in their
own kingdom. Increase your understanding of how they depend on and affect the redwood
forest ecosystem.
There will be an introduction with slides and fungi samples in the audio/visual room.
Then, identify the major kinds of fruiting bodies and lichens as you trek through the
moist climate of the redwood trails. This is a rain or shine class. Bring a lunch, good
walking shoes, a hand lens or magnifying glass, and a small mirror for viewing the
undersides of the fruiting bodies is also very useful.
