Save-the-Redwoods League

The Save-the-Redwoods League has played an important part in the history of Humboldt Redwoods State Park. In 1917, the organizers of the Save-the-Redwoods League visited the area that is now Humboldt Redwoods State Park. They could see that the magnificent redwood forests of this area would be lost within a few years unless something was done to save them. Their concern and foresight led to the creation of the League in 1918. In 1921, the League made its first purchase of redwoods that was to become the present state park. Since then, more than 100 Memorial Groves have been established within Humboldt Redwoods State Park with the help of League funds.
Tree Planting Program For a donation of $50, a tree will be planted somewhere in the park. Donations may be made in honor of an individual or organization. The tree planting program is a resource management program that focuses on re-planting areas that were formerly redwood forest before they were cleared for agricultural or other purposes. Once the land has been prepared, redwoods are planted and maintained until they grow large enough to survive on their own. Thousands of seedlings are planted in the park each year through generous donations to this program.

Honor Groves The park has several Honor Groves set aside where donors can have a tree named for someone. There are currently three Honor Groves in the park.

Memorial Groves The Memorial Grove program allows donors to have a grove of trees named as a memorial. As you drive the Avenue of the Giants, you will see signs like the one below denoting the memorial groves. Groves have been named for individuals and organizations. The first grove in the park, the Bolling Grove, is a Memorial Grove established in 1921 to honor a World War I hero.
