Volunteering in the Park

Volunteers help in many aspects of running the park. They provide much-needed assistance to park staff and visitors. There are opportunities for camp hosts, visitor center hosts, and docents at various trailheads. Volunteers may be provided a free campsite in exchange for a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. Many parks in the North Coast Redwoods District need volunteers. Find out more about these parks by reading the descriptions on the "Other Nearby State Parks" page. When you decide which park(s) you are interested in, contact them, or the North Coast Redwoods District office and request a Host/Volunteer Application. (These may soon be available on this web site for download. For now, you should call the park, or district office to obtain one.) If you are interested in applying to more than one park, you may send your application to the district office and indicate which parks you are interested in.

Camp Hosts

Camp hosts generally stay for a month, sometimes longer. Camp hosts are the "friendly hosts" for the campers and the "eyes and ears" for staff.  They answer visitor questions, sell firewood, provide information, perform light housekeeping, and assist with campground operations.

Volunteers are needed from April until October. Both Albee Creek Campground and Cuneo Creek Horse Camp have had camp hosts in the past. Volunteers bring their own motorhome or trailer.*

Visitor Center Hosts

Visitor center hosts staff the visitor center. They answer visitor questions, give directions and literature, perform light housekeeping, assist with bookstore sales and interpretive/educational programs. Volunteers are needed year-round, although visitation to the park drops off significantly in winter. Volunteers bring their own motorhome or trailer.* Visitor center hosts generally stay for a month, sometimes longer.

Docents

Docents must attend the docent training, which is usually offered annually. Check with the Visitor Center for the current schedule. Docents usually volunteer at the most popular trailheads, selling maps, giving directions and information, and answering visitor questions.

* The camp host and visitor center host campsites have full hookups, including water, electric and sewer. Visitor center host sites are not in the public campground. This applies to Humboldt Redwoods only. For information about volunteer sites at other parks, contact them directly.
