THE CONTINUING ECONOMIC SANCTIONS CONSTITUTE AN UNJUSTIFIED AGGRESSION AGAINST THE CIVILIAN POPULATION OF IRAQ -- A VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL LAW AND A CRIME AGAINST THE HUMAN FAMILY.
On May 4th, former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and Reverend Lucius Walker departed for Jordan on route to the 1998 Iraq Sanctions Challenge. Veterans for Peace Chapter 22 president and delegate, Fredy Champagne joined them and nearly 100 peace activists, in direct defiance of the economic sanctions of Iraq. The group delivered tons of medical aid to hospitals and visited schools, water treatment plants and regions hard-hit by the bombing.
The sanctions, enforced by a coordinated air, ground and naval blockade devastate Iraq society.
The toll is one and a half million people dead, including half of the children under the age of 5 years of age. On the May 12, 1996 television program "60 Minutes," Lesley Stahl asked Albright: "We have heard that a half a million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. Is the price worth it?" Albright responded: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price -- we think the price is worth it." Thus began a new era of struggle against sanctions. The Veterans for Peace Pittsburgh Chapter issued a call for 5,000 baby dolls to illustrate the reality of the horror of the monthly rate of dead children. Networking also has grown among French, Belgian, Italian, Spanish and Russian organizations.
Iraq’s crisis can only be resolved by ending the sanctions. Iraq must be allowed to resume normal economic relations with other countries. We do NOT support the regime of Saddam Hussein. We oppose the sanctions because we support the Iraqi people. People are suffering because of the governments of both the Iraqi and U.S.
