Garberville Chapter 22 of Veterans for Peace and elements of VFP 56, Arcata, were present at a rally in support of Julia Butterfly Hill's 100th day in her tree-sit in an ancient redwood tree she has named 'Luna' located above and to the side of the Stafford, California town and infamous mud slide. (A mudslide, caused either by logging on the steep slopes of this rain forest area or by act of God, which destroyed 7 homes in the town.) VFP members presented an award, the Wage Peace Medal of Valor and other veteran groups added cash donations, in recognition of Ms. Hill's outspoken commitment to saving the last of these old growth trees, and in weathering the difficult winter storms of 97-98 (She went up on 10 December 1997). This rally was part of the
continuing campaign to save Headwaters Forest and promote the Headwaters Forest Stewardship Plan.
UPDATE 3-10-99 The plan was quashed by lobbyists and politicians, a different plan that squanders all but 8 groves of the 60,000 acre forest was adopted Sept 1, l998. Julia Butterfly continues to be the spokesperson for the old growth and in December 1998 celebrated her one year aniversary in Luna. Though awarded other honors and given accolades by many and varried groups of people she continues to urge all sentient beings to focus instead on the necessary work required for the protection of these last great trees.
